New kids and teenagers pages

Weve just rolled out new kids and teenagers pages in our family section. The kids page includes a stack of awesome reading and educational links – a definite must see for anyone with kids aged from 4 to 14, depending on reading level. Also we’ve now linked to Friv.com, widely regarded as the greatest free online kids games site ever! My own kids recommend it highly and I’ve seen them playing quite a few of the games. They’re all what I would term “safe” as well as being completely free and no signups required. If I wasn’t so busy working you know i’d be playing games :) *sigh*
Also as I mentioned, we have a new page devoted to teenagers as well. Covering a few issues that these wonderful people are concerned with: school and studying; nagging parents, building relationships with other young and not so young adults, and generally how to make the transition from childhood to young adulthood as painless as possible. I’m definitely looking for feedback on that page so if you have any stray teenagers please get them to cast a beady eye over it and let me know what they think. Thanks.
Also today we’ve installed a lifestyle page which will bring our gardening, food & recipes and all other hobbies and pastimes under one banner. We were getting too many Tabs across the top of the page when it wasn’t really warranted. I’m still not sure about having the food section lumped in there but Foodie really is a lifestyle choice for many people, and I don’t know of many good lifestyles that don’t include food as one of the core requirements. No smart comments about eating disorders please I do not count them as a good lifestyle choice :) Soon to be added under the lifestyle banner is a section devoted to collectors and collecting. I’m thinking stamps, comics, gemstones and maybe old music albums and old books. Definitely do not want to include people collecting teaspoons or tea towels at this point in time but if I get hassled enough then I may open it up. I’m sorting out a plugin that will allow us to post up people’s photos in a flip-page style photo album. Keep sending in those pics we’ve got a great collection now but please remember I will not post photos that you have “obtained” that allow people to be easily identified, unless you can assure me that they have told you it’s ok. Then by all means let’s get them up :) I’ve still kept advertising on the site to a bare minimum – just the occasional banner here and there. Some pages have no ads at all, and you won’t see page after page of column ads or text ads appearing to be articles. Real content is what we’re about so get stuck in and enjoy it. Oh yeah – just added a newsfeed from CNN, a word of the day and a quote of the day, so there’s plenty of fresh things to read every visit. It is not all beer and skittles round here I tell you. Ok I’ve laid it out for you to play it out – see you on the site. Peace.
Mike.

Giant squid invasion!!!

They’re here!! So giant squid are invading the Oregon coast. Apparently it is uncommon for them to travel so far north up the coastline. My question is this… are there many beachings further south where they usually live? If they often wash up on the beach further south then the only mystery is why are they so far north? If they never come ashore further south then the mystery is doubled.

Philippine news – Typhoon brings massive floods

The topical storm hitting Manila and the rest of the Philippines right now has dumped a month’s rain in just a few hours, causing severe flooding in many areas. Four children are believed to have perished with another four unaccounted for at this stage. The storm is expected to continue for another few hours, with flood waters already three-fee-deep in places. Residents near the Angat Dam are being evacuated as the water level in the reservoir has almost reached the spill-over point. Communications in parts of the country have been disrupted and reports of damage and loss of life are still sketchy. Further reports are expected from Bloomberg.com’s reporter on the ground in Manila.

New Zealand drug raids net 56 arrests

New Zealand Police have seized cannabis plants and methamphetamine in two major drug operations today. The raids were the result of several months of undercover work in Northland and the Hawkes Bay areas. Most of the cannabis was being grown indoors and was the supply source for a number of residential selling houses or “tinnie” houses. Police say they have made a substantial dent in the cannabis supply to the areas. They expect to make more arrests related to the raids in the next few days.

Australia’s dust storm reaches New Zealand

New Zealand residents found a thin layer of fine red dust on cars and windows today. A large dust storm in the Australian desert blew up a huge cloud of dust which has travelled on the winds for thousands of miles and deposited itself in New Zealand. Quite a bizarre event but not totally unprecedented. A few years ago an algal bloom off the coast of Australia made its way across the Tasman Sea and hit new Zealand shores, polluting the local shellfish and making it toxic to humans for several months. So is there anything nasty in this dust and what health hazards does it present, if any? Is this Australia’s way of telling us to eat its dust??
