No wonder they call New Zealand the Shaky Isles ![]()
The reality of the tsunami in Samoa is hitting home hard because of the special link we in New Zealand have with that country.
Over the years, many samoans have come here looking for work, and traditionally sent a good portion of their income back to their family in the islands. This has been common since the 1970′s, and as a result, Auckland city has become the city with the largest Polynesian population in the world. With the disaster there recently, it is as if a dark cloud has descended over parts of our community.
Our samoan families have never been ones to complain or make much noise in the community, and have often endured quite hard living conditions. So we should all be mindful that now is a particularly hard time for many of them.
