New Zealand Holiday – A Guide to Kiwis

The bird, the fruit, and the New Zealand people

Welcome to our homes and our hearts…

The physical beauty of New Zealand is undeniable, and the diversity of the scenery is unparalleled anywhere in the world, but what makes a New Zealand holiday completely unique is the welcoming and personable nature of the New Zealand people. You will find the breathtaking beauty of the country reflected in the warm smiles and courteous nature of all New Zealanders.

Making your New Zealand holiday last a lifetime…

The New Zealand population is made up of immigrants from all corners of the world, many of whom first visited the country as a holiday destination and fell in love with it.

A Kiwi is actually a native New Zealand bird…

Ok, it is time to draw back the curtain on the word “kiwi.” Kiwi is the name of the national bird of New Zealand, and over time has become the unofficial tag for New Zealand residents as well.

A number of years ago, a type of fruit known as the Chinese gooseberry was introduced to New Zealand, where it grows extremely well. The fruit was renamed “kiwifruit” in order to identify it as a New Zealand product. In the United States, this name has been shortened back to “kiwis” and is now sometimes used to describe certain body parts.

This adaptation of the word can cause occasional misunderstandings so it is important for visitors to New Zealand to realise the word is used in everyday language here without embarassment.

We kiwis do not take our paradise home for granted. We appreciate the beauty and unique nature of this special land, and so we understand why so many people want to visit here.

We also understand that many will want to move here permanently once they have discovered how beautiful New Zealand truly is. We do ask all visitors to help keep our country clean and green, but most of all we invite you to come and visit. Come and make your next holiday a New Zealand holiday. We guarantee it will change your life forever.
