Traditional Maori Handcrafts

The Maori are the native people of New Zealand who have a special bond with this country which they call “Aotearoa” which means “Land of the Long White Cloud.”

Traditionally Maori carved tools from bone, pearl shell and jade, which they call “Pounamu.”

Maori Carved Jade Pendants

New Zealand jade is quite dark and extremely hard, making it ideal for the pendants, adzes and fighting clubs they made from it.

In modern times, New Zealand Pounamu has taken on a special spiritual meaning for Maori and acquiring it for pendants and carvings is a difficult process, so imported jade is regularly used in its place. This in no way lessens the value of the pieces, as top quality jade is still used. Each piece shown here is strictly handmade from New Zealand or imported jade and is unique.
